#5 Fame and fortune
This comes in at number 5 because it is more of a potential thing that could make me run. Suffice to say that as far as I am concerned (and probably you too) I am not yet famous for my running (unless you call public ridicule, fame). As a result I haven’t found a way to make a fortune out of running, and I’m not sure if it is even possible. I’ll have to work on this one.
#4 Fun and fanatacism
This is more like it. Of course you know how much fun, running can be. There is only one thing that makes running more fun, and that is being fanatical about it. To go out of your way to do something you enjoy, and to go out of your way to enjoy doing it, is the essence of fanatacism. I try to make sure that I enjoy every bit of my life as a runner.
#3 Feelings of euphoria
The secret is out throughout the world. Runners are onto a perfectly legal but debilitatingly addictive drug. “Runners high” is a well documented but seriously missunderstood phenomenon. People love to talk about hormones, and chemicals, endorphines and neural pathways. Really, I think it is all a bit too beautiful to define like that. Any serious runner will tell you how good it feels.
#2 Freedom
When I run, I am my own master. There are no rules that hold me down, no boundaries that hem me in, and no responsibilities to slow me up. There is only one person who has control over my running and that is me. If the governement ever tried to make running compulsory, I would stop doing it straight away.
#1 Fury Fido
Number one is back to primal instincts. Whether I am supposed to be running or not, the surprise I get when one of those massive dogs lauches itself at me, is guaranteed to get me running. There is something hard to define but definetely repelant about being bitten by large canines. While some dogs are a mans best friend, a strange dog in a strange place with a strange look in its eyes, makes me run. There is nothing that turns a good day bad like the feeling of Fido taking a mouthful of your backend.

#1 is a definite, nothing like a ferocious dog to make you haul ars. I would also add that I run to the door at 5pm on Friday to get out of work. I also run when someone says the words “free beer”. LOL. Good luck in the writing competition.

When I was younger, I used to run a lot. At least 4-5 miles a day, more if I had the time. The reason… #2 and #3. I can’t tell you how good I felt for the rest of the day after turning out a few quick miles. Too bad my ankles gave out. Now I ride a bike or swim, but it is not the same.

It’s freedom, yes. Definitely freedom, relaxation, and running behind freaky fidos?
12 Kristen (Quirky) // May 10, 2007 at 5:03 am
Even though I don’t run on a strict normal basis (unless you count keeping up with the 3 year old a routine of running :)) I do run every once in a while and freedom is definitely a top reason! It is my time and no one else’s, something that isn’t easy to grasp in my family
Great top 5!

Thanks for the comment on my top 5 post. I used to be a runner as well. I’ve joined around 3 fun runs and always ended up behind the pack.
One good thing about running is that it is the only sports which is free.

Tom,
Thanks for visiting and commenting on My Top Five Firsts of the First Two Years of the American Civil War.
Your Top 5 post struck a cord with me. It’s been 11 years since I was a runner. I just got out of the habit and now at 55 and retired, getting back in shape to get back at running is oh-so-difficult. Maybe someday!

I work from home so I don’t get the luxury of running out the door on a Friday arvo, but I can definetely understand running for a free beer. Shame it doesn’t happen more often.

Shame about your ankles, but cycling and swimming are pretty good substitutes for running (I love a good triathlon). I’m interested to find out how your bad ankles deal with cycling. Some people find it helps, others find it hurts more.

I never expected everyone would like running, everyone has their own thing. I guess that is the beauty of being human, in that we are all a bit different.

I think freedom is really my #1 too. Dogs can get me, but the risk is worth it if I get to be free.

Freedom is the go, especially when you spend a lot of your time with little children. Of course we love them, but we also need time off. My daughter is only two but I think she gives me the best running workout that anyone could ever want.

I totally agree. I can’t imagine why running is still free. Someone has found a way to get us to pay for just about everything else we do, but running still doesn’t cost us anything if we don’t want it to.

Hi Tom,
How funny, the chance that a dog will take a chunk out of you making you run, that gave me a laugh.
I know a married couple who run everyday at 0500. I’m not a runner (I walk fast, love my treadmill), however there are those who swear by it. Sounds like you love it. My ultimate love is downhill skiing. If I could ski every single day of the year, I would.
All the best,
JoLynn

[…] Tom at Runningmonkeys has a definite place in my heart! I used to be an avid runner, stopped for about 20 years and took up smoking. I quit smoking three years ago and started running again. As usual, life gets in the way and I don’t have the distance I used to, but, I still love it! Hey Tom, I’m attempting a half marathon next month. Any advice for the out of condition runner? This is a must visit for runners! […]

Hey Tom, how’s THAT for a comment starter? Wow, nice job! Yeah, the dogs in Thailand don’t like the foreign people running down their streets - so usually I do it in the park. There are 15 dogs in the park but even strange ‘mericans are ignored. Step outside the park and dogs come running off farmland from a mile away when they smell me. Good to be heading back to aloha land… Oh wait, don’t they have pit bulls and rottys there?

Hi Vern
Everywhere has their own favourite dog breeds don’t they? I guess you are probably right about the pit bulls and rottys. I imagine most of the dogs in Thailand are crossbred weird looking dogs. They can be some of the least predictable and sometimes the fastest of the lot. Over here in Japan a lot of people seem to have a fascination with small stylish dogs like dash hounds and minature poodles. The only reason they are dangerous is if you trip over them.
You’d better stay fit if you want to stay ahead of those pit bulls when you get there!
